International Standards

Anchored in IAEA Standards from Day One

Vertex Atomic integrates IAEA Safety Standards and safeguards principles into every advisory engagement — not as a compliance afterthought, but as the foundation of our methodology.

Our Standards Foundation

Four pillars of the international nuclear framework.

Every Vertex Atomic engagement is explicitly grounded in the international standards that govern civilian nuclear energy. These are not aspirational references — they are the operational framework within which all advisory recommendations are made.

IAEA Safety Standards Series — siting, design review coordination, operation, radiation protection

Convention on Nuclear Safety — international obligations and peer-review framework

Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements and the Additional Protocol — IAEA verification

IAEA Nuclear Security Series — guidance on physical protection and material security

Safeguards by Design

Safeguards culture instituted from program inception, not retrofitted.

"Safeguards by design" means building material accounting and control systems, transparency with IAEA inspectors, and nonproliferation considerations into the program's architecture from the beginning — not adding them after construction decisions have been made and budgets committed.

Vertex Atomic advises clients to establish these systems early, alongside regulatory and institutional frameworks. Retrofitting safeguards is always more expensive, less effective, and more disruptive than designing them in from the start. This principle shapes every recommendation we make.

Structural architecture

Working with the IAEA

Engagement with IAEA technical cooperation and review missions.

Vertex Atomic helps clients engage with the IAEA across the full spectrum of its support mechanisms — technical cooperation programs, INIR and IRRS missions, and documentation for safeguards implementation. We help prepare the self-assessments, organize the documentation, and ensure the client arrives at IAEA engagements with clarity about their own position and gaps.

Critically, we always defer final determinations to the IAEA and national authorities. Our role is to prepare the client for a productive engagement with the IAEA — not to substitute for it. The IAEA's authority in safeguards and safety is sole and non-delegable.
